Chapter Twenty-Two

Kole leaned against damp stone and stared at the building entrance across the wide street. Hovercars zipped by in both directions, briefly obscuring his view as they passed.

“Surveillance is boring,” Neela said grumpily. She was sitting on the cracked sidewalk at his feet, leaning back to look up into the sky. There was little air traffic on this world, and every ship that did pass overhead was owned and operated by a member of the Gray Wolf syndicate.

“It’s necessary,” Kole said, nudging her with the toe of his boot. “It’s also time to move. We’ve been here for half an hour, and I don’t want anyone getting curious enough to come check us out.”

She clambered up to her feet, wrapping an arm around his as they began to stroll along the sidewalk. Kole glanced surreptitiously toward the building every few steps, checking to make sure no one hurried out through the doors he’d been observing to follow them. “What now?” Neela asked.

“Now we find a different vantage point,” he said, smiling when she groaned at the thought of more sitting.

It had been surprisingly easy to locate the building where the Gray Wolf leadership worked. Kole was more surprised when they discovered that the building was rather bland and anonymous from the outside, easily overshadowed by larger and more ascetically pleasing structures nearby. He had to wonder if the low profile was Godwin’s decision, or a tradition dating back to his predecessors.

For the last several hours, they’d been watching the building from different vantage points, hoping to spot Godwin entering or leaving so they could follow him. Kole had seen enough of the security around the building to know it would take a small army to get inside and reach the top floor where he assumed the leader of the syndicate would have a palatial office. An army that would never make it through the defenses in orbit to reach the planet.

Unfortunately, he was beginning to think Godwin also lived in the building and rarely left it. He’d seen it before with extremely wealthy corporate overlords who were often paranoid and feared kidnapping or attacks by disgruntled workers. More often than not, they were the sort of people who rubbed everyone the wrong way and were right to be paranoid. It was puzzling here, though, when the Gray Wolves were so obviously in control of the entire system. Godwin should have been comfortable with moving around whenever and wherever he pleased on the planet.

Neela tugged on his arm, breaking his reverie and pulling him toward the doors of a shop. “Five minutes,” she pleaded. “I deserve it after all the boring surveillance.”

Kole chuckled, knowing he could never say no when she flashed her eyes at him the way she was at that moment. “No more than five,” he said, gratified to hear a squeal of excitement as she pulled him into the store. A cloud of perfume slapped him in the face the moment he crossed over the threshold, and Kole knew his dwindling bank account was in trouble.
